What Obama and the Democrats Have Done to Medicare

Every election season for at least the last 30 years Democrats have tried to scare seniors with allegations that Republicans want to cut their Medicare, or Social Security, or both. It’s an old saw that has become a reliable standby in the Democrat playbook. Of course, it’s a lie.

Republicans have never proposed or tried to do any such thing. But Democrats have. Every Democrat that voted for Obamacare necessarily voted to cut Medicare because Obamacare cut at least $500 Million from Medicare in order to persuade the CBO to certify its cost at under $1 Trillion [but now we find out its true cost will far exceed $1 Trillion].

Seniors will start to see this assault on Medicare if they haven’t already. Those enrolled in Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part D, will begin to lose their plans as insurance companies cease to offer them because of the cut in payments. This will have a devastating impact because Medicare Advantage has been a hugely popular program. It allows seniors to pretty much choose their doctor and visit just about any hospital or urgent care clinic with sensible co-pays and coverage limits. For those who do not have health insurance as part of their company pension, and fewer and fewer do these days, Medicare Advantage is, or was, a terrific deal.

Repeal of old laws and not the enactment of new laws is all that is needed to fix health insurance and restore the American engine of innovation and advancement in health care. Obamacare must be repealed if Americans of any age are ever to have access to health insurance that works intelligently and is affordable. A lot of other laws that existed before Obamacare must also be repealed to allow the purchase of health insurance across state lines, get rid of all state and federal mandates that dictate what kind of health insurance we can buy, and allow consumers and insurance companies to experiment with new types of policies and co-payment practices.

In the effort to get Government out of the way and to allow an emergent order to develop in health care and health insurance, the Republican establishment, especially in the Senate, is every bit as much an enemy of the people as the Democrats. For example, neither Mitch McConnel nor Lamar Alexander have signed on as co-sponsors of Senator Jim DeMint’s legislation to repeal Obamacare. Senator Judd Gregg just said on the Fox Business Network that he doesn’t think repealing or cutting off funding for Obamacare is the best approach. He wants to simply “restructure” it. Establishment Republicans like Gregg, along with McConnell and Alexander, just can’t fathom a country where the people do their own “restructuring” without interference from Washington D.C. A restructured Obamacare by establishment Republicans would simply replace a hideous monster with a still dysfunctional lemon of a system of stupid regulations, mandates and taxes.

Erick Erickson is right. Unless Americans in their respective states elect Pat Toomey, Marco Rubio, Ken Buck, Ron Johnson, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Sharron Angle, and Joe Miller to the Senate on November 2, we will never see Obamacare repealed. I’d like to see Christine O’Donnell thrown in for good measure.
