Why This Will Never Happen
Chart prepared by the Heritage Foundation
There is no doubt the chart is accurate. It is prepared by extrapolation forward of current conditions. It will never happen, however, because current conditions will not, and never do, continue unabated. If something cannot go on forever, it won’t. If one measured the amount of horse manure in the streets of Manhattan in 1890 and also assumed it would continue to accumulate at its then-current rate, and extrapolated forward to say 1930, you’d have predicted that Manhattan would be buried under about 20 feet of horse manure by that time. Actually, that might not have been a bad thing.
But current circumstances won’t continue without change. No one can reasonably believe that entitlements can continue to grow at the same rate they are growing now because before 2049 the whole system will come tumbling down around our necks. No one will pay taxes just to support other people. No one will work if all their work can do for them is pay their taxes. It is what will happen as a consequence of entitlement implosion, that is what people should be worried about. Just what that will entail cannot be predicted with much certainty, but it is certain to be pretty awful.
The only way to stave it off is not to wait for it to happen. Unlike earthquakes, this can be predicted and steps taken to avoid it. Entitlement reform must be done now, before it is too late and the collapse of the entire economy is upon us. How can it be done? Or is it better to ask, can anything be done at all? The answer is yes, we even have a pretty good idea what to do. But here is the problem: So long as Democrats hold power, i.e., as long as so-called “progressives” hold sway, no progress can be made.
Our only salvation, our grandchildrens’ only salvation, is to defeat every Democrat in every election. Then, and only then, can something be done to save the American dream of individual freedom and prosperity for your grandchildren.
