Don’t Know Much About…His-tor-eee

Obama flubbed his history last night when he said Abraham Lincoln founded the Republican Party.  The Republican party was founded in 1854 in Wisconsin.  In 1855 Lincoln made a failed attempt to run for the U.S. Senate as a Whig, but gave it up and threw his support to Lyman Trumbull.  The old Whig party was on its last legs and Lincoln joined the new Republican party in 1856.

You know the rest.

Here are a few other facts of which Obama might need some tutoring:

Lincoln made his first public statement against slavery in 1837.  He thought slavery was immoral but also thought it was protected by the Constitution in those states where it already existed.

As a Whig Lincoln believed in American Exceptionalism, that America uniquely in the world offered opportunity for all men.  He praised the American system of economic opportunity in which the “man who labored for another last year, this year labors for himself, and next year he will hire others to labor for him.” Slavery was the opposite of opportunity, and Lincoln was dead set against it’s spread to the new territories.

The Republican party was a natural home for a former Whig such as Lincoln because it was founded in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820.  The Grand Compromise prohibited the spread of slavery, but Kansas-Nebraska opened the way for it to take hold in the West by providing that the settlers themselves could decide.  Lincoln and others like him rightly feared that settlers from the Old South would swarm to the new territories and establish slavery there.

The Civil War was made inevitable by that misbegotten Act of Congress.

Now another horrible Act of Congress called Obamacare has divided the country.  It won’t lead to a sectional conflict like the Civil War because the division is cultural and political and not along sectional lines.  Nevertheless, it has and will continue to divided the American people in bitter disputes until, like the Kansas-Nebraska Act before it, is finally laid to rest on the junk heap of history.

Factoid:  The Republican party is called the Grand Old Party (GOP) because it takes its name from the name “Democratic-Republicans” that Thomas Jefferson and James Madison used to describe themselves.

Of course it’s troubling that Obama seems to have huge gaps in his education. He was evidently unaware that Austrians speak German for example. He seems to be totally ignorant of economics. Presidents aren’t supposed to be experts, they’re drawn from the ranks of the common man and are supposed to have common sense. That’s the problem: he has no common sense. He’s “black” but he’s not from the ‘hood. He was the product of an absent radical father and a lefty groupie mom and educated in the liberal fantasy halls of the Ivy League. He never had to deal with the real world even once in his life. If he’d been from the ‘hood he would have the sense not to appear to be a pathetic clown in the presence of our enemies.

I was driving with my liberal friend in West Oakland one day. This young black guy was on the curb waiting to cross. I stopped the car and motioned him go on (in California pedestrians have the right of way at intersections). He wouldn’t go. “You go first,” he gestured. I was being polite but he wouldn’t take the offer. My liberal friend couldn’t understand. What was he waiting for? I had to explain it to him: you don’t get in front of car where you could be run down. Of course if the guy had known we were just a couple of nice white guys being polite he wouldn’t have had anything to fear, but in the ghetto you don’t take chances. The world is like the ‘hood and Obama is just another clueless fool. Obama thinks the world is like the Harvard yard. Even if he knew that LIncoln didn’t found the Republican Party or that Austrians speak German he’d still be a clueless fool.
