Crony Capitalism.  The Obama Administration has handed out 111 Obamacare waivers to US companies… And, they’re hiding this from the American public. It takes 6 clicks to find out this information on the Health Care website. Unfortunately, if you’re a small business or don’t have connections you can’t get a waiver for your company. That’s the new reality under the Obama-Pelosi regime.

California’s Whooping Cough Epidemic Centered in Rich, White Counties Glenn Reynolds explains:  “Because that’s who’s dumb enough to believe the anti-vaccine crap.” I guess they live pretty much the same way they vote.

Obama Throws a Gutter Ball in South Korea. “Has there ever been a major economic summit where a U.S. President and his Treasury Secretary were as thoroughly rebuffed as they were at this week’s G-20 meeting in Seoul? We can’t think of one. President Obama failed to achieve any of his main goals while getting pounded by other world leaders for failing U.S. policies and lagging growth.” Looking just at the South Korea debacle, Obama tried to renegotiate the trade agreement reached with South Korea in 2007, which has yet to be submitted to Congress.  Obama campaigned against it in 2008 and now seeks amendments to add protectionist measures for his union buddies.  But the South Koreans think a deal is a deal and told Obama to go pound sand.  Read the whole story for more tales of embarrassment for the the U.S. President and his clueless Treasury Secretary.

Planned Parenthood is worried — And Should Be.  Their arguments to keep their taxpayer-funded boondoggle are getting more and more buffoonish.

Complete analysis of the 2010 election in the AEI Political Report.  Some of it interesting, some of it encouraging for conservatism, and some of it disturbing.  For example, in California, Colorado, and Arizona, 67, 62, and 55 percent of voters in Senate contests respectively said most illegal immigrants should be given legal status.  If you see illegal immigrants as hard working family oriented people seeking a better life it might be easy to hold that view.  But it also requires one to ignore the violent crime wave that some illegal immigrants are visiting on American citizens who never see their tormentors held to account when they slip back into Mexico and effectively evade our laws at all points of contact with this country.  Phoenix is a crime ridden city due solely to violent illegals who commit horrific crimes and slip away, only to return later and commit more crimes.  Often cops know exactly where they are but cannot touch them because the Mexican government refuses to cooperate.  Mexico will not extradite the most heinous of murderers unless we agree not to seek the death penalty even though there is not a government in the West that values human life less than the Mexican government, and that includes Cuba.  Those few Americans who are able to visit Cuba do not have to worry about being murdered there, but American tourists have been murdered in Mexico in significant numbers, and in most cases the Mexican government will not even investigate.    An amnesty bill would encourage even more illegals to cross over to line up for the next amnesty path to U.S. citizenship making our border with Mexico even less secure than it already is and exacerbate the crime problem.  The feel good opinions of those voter majorities are not thought through.  They fail to ask the necessary question of, “OK, then what will happen?”


California Political Class Wants Boycott of Arizona — California Voters Want Arizona Type Immigration Law

Just below in A Quote For Our Times I posted a quote from the 2002 book Government Failure: A Primer On Public Choice, which opines that Lincoln’s phrase from the last line of the Gettysburg Address [“that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”] would today need to be changed because we no longer have a government “of, by and for” the people. The government that rules our lives today is a government of the politicians, by the bureaucrats, and for the well-connected political activists.

This recent poll showing that California politicians are out of step with California voters is therefore poignant. A majority of voters in California would favor an immigration law like the one recently enacted by Arizona while nearly every city council in California is adopting resolutions to condemn it and trying to institute boycotts of Arizona.

Reading is Really Swell

If reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body, the Washington elites and liberal “progressives” are badly out of shape. Mentally, that is.

If the Democrats aren’t going to read the Arizona law before shooting off their mouths about it, somebody who likes them might remind them that it is better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

President Felipe Calderon Makes A Jackass of Himself — Democrats Cheer

Mexican President Felipe Calderon came to the United States, spoke before Congress and then went on CNN’s Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Their is no kinder way to describe his visit than to say that in both instances he made a fool of himself, to the wild cheers of Democrats [to their everlasting embarrassment a few Republicans saps also applauded].

Calderon did something that foreign politicians, even dictators, usually try to avoid. He came here and inserted himself into a one of our hot domestic political issues. Foreign leaders normally avoid that because you can never be sure which way the winds will blow tomorrow. If you make an enemy today of the faction that comes into power tomorrow you have made a grave mistake that will weaken your interests in the future. It goes against Machiavelli’s strongest advice to a prince lest he end up on the losing side when the matter is finally resolved. Nations do not have friends, nations have interests. Squandering the future interests of your own country for some feel-good pandering to the current regime is a fool’s game; smart foreign leaders don’t do it. By helping Obama play the race card against Arizona, Calderon showed himself to be a fool, and made a jackass of himself before the world. [The world probably loved it, but will still recognize Calderon as a dummy]

Calderon pandered to Obama and the Democrats by attacking the Arizona law as “violating the human rights of all people” and constituting racial discrimination. Never mind that the law does not allow police in Arizona any more latitude in stopping anyone and asking for ID than existed before the law was enacted. The same standard of “reasonable suspicion” that criminal activity may be afoot still applies to every police stop of any person, a standard first established by the U.S. Supreme Court in Terry v. Ohio, 392 U.S. 1 (1968). The new Arizona law simply provides that if the person has been legally stopped and questioned and cannot produce one of several forms of ID that are deemed adequate by the law (a drivers license will do), and if there is reason to believe that person is in the country illegally then that person can be transported to a Federal immigration facility. After that, their ultimate fate is left to Federal immigration officials. This is what Obama, and now with aid and comfort from Calderon, calls racial profiling.

Calderon also injected himself in the issue of gun control in the United States. He made the ridiculous and ignorant claim that Mexican drug lords are getting their weapons from the U.S. Apparently, he wants us to believe that they are crossing the border and buying machine guns, grenade launchers, bazookas, and improvised explosive devices from mom and pop gun stores in Arizona and Texas. To my knowledge there has only been one case where a gun store was charged with selling an illegal weapon to Mexican drug lords and it was thrown out of court because the prosecution showed up for trial with no evidence to support the charge. If indeed any Mexican drug lords are obtaining weapons from the United States they and whoever is supplying those weapons are breaking felony laws already on the books. Nevertheless, Calderon wants Congress to re-impose the Clinton gun ban on AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, the most popular rifle owned by law-abiding Americans for hunting, sport shooting, and home defense. These are not even the sort of weapons most commonly used by Mexican drug lords who are outfitted with full-auto machine guns which no American can legally own (unless it is a fully registered piece, requiring the approval of law enforcement, and was manufactured prior to 1986; a limited stock of these exist and they can cost upwards of $25,000 a copy).

Of course, Congressional Democrats gave Calderon a standing ovation after he concluded his idiotic rant.

Next he appeared on CNN’s Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer for another round of jackass remarks. Mexico has issued a travelers’s warning to its citizens against traveling to Arizona. Blitzer asked Calderon what a Mexican citizen with a passport and a tourist visa has to fear in Arizona. Calderon stumbled around searching for an answer and the best he could come up with was, “Well, they look Mexican.” Really. Lets see, I’m not sure what percentage of Arizona residents “look Mexican” but I am confident it is quite a significant percentage. I’m willing to bet that in Arizona a fair number of bureaucrats, police officers, mayors, local politicians, firefighters, Federal immigration officers, border patrol officers, College professors, business owners and executives, etc.,etc. also “look Mexican.” Does Calderon believe the new Arizona law puts them in danger? Did he feel foolish making such an asinine statement on national television and before the U.S. Congress? Well, I guess not. The Democrats in Congress didn’t feel foolish giving him a standing ovation for it.

What I’ve said so far only scratches the surface of Calderon’s jackass behavior in the United States. This episode in history will be remembered in the 22nd century. The video below has Wolf Blitzer asking Calderon if a citizen of Guatemala or Nicaragua could walk across the Mexican border and get a job in Mexico. Of course, Calderon with no apparent realization of how ridiculous the answer to Blitzer’s question was making him out to be, stated the obvious that no, one cannot walk across the Mexican border and get a job. As he said, “We want to ask, ‘who are you?’ when you come into Mexico,” and “You must fill out a form.” Can you get a job and work? “No, you must have permission,” said Calderon. What if one sneaks into Mexico and starts working? What happens? “We send back them,” Calderon replied, obviously meaning, “We send them back [to where they came from]”.

Blitzer asks, “Do Mexican Police go around asking people for papers?” Calderon’s answer: “Of, Course.”

When asked about about Mexico’s immigration laws that subject illegal immigrants to years in a Mexican prison, Calderon admits that this was the law in Mexico until one year ago when he says it was repealed. Now, he says with no apparent awareness of a contradiction, “Illegal immigration into Mexico is no longer a crime.”

While the administration was fulminating about the horrific human-rights violation the Arizona law represents, Amnesty International was issuing a report about Mexico’s mistreatment of its own illegal migrants. “Migrants in Mexico are facing a major human rights crisis leaving them with virtually no access to justice, fearing reprisals and deportation if they complain of abuses,” said Rupert Knox, Mexico researcher at Amnesty International. “Persistent failure by the authorities to tackle abuses carried out against irregular migrants has made their journey through Mexico one of the most dangerous in the world.”

Amnesty international is talking about migrants from Guatemala, Nicaragua, etc. trying to make their way through Mexico to get to the United States. While Obama and Calderon are making trash talk they are apparently ignorant or just couldn’t care less about the conservatives, such a Walter Williams for instance, who want to first secure our border but then, and only then, to change our laws to make it easier for people from Mexico and Central America to come here legally. Many of these people have lived under oppression with no hope of a better life in their home country. They are the very stuff of immigration that has helped to make America great because having been denied freedom they have a keen appreciation for the liberty to pursue happiness in one’s own way. Americans will welcome them as they always have. First, politicians who see these immigrants not as unique human beings but only as part of the vote tally have to be defeated.


Psssst…Senor Calderon. Did you know that 71% of Arizonans support the new immigration law? And that Governor Jan Brewer has stepped out to a 13 point lead over her Democrat rival? Just thought you’d like to know.

I love Arizona. I’m committed to spending more time there. I’m getting on the motorcycle and heading for Monument Valley, Show Low, Payson, Prescott, Sedona, Jerome, Darnell Hill, Wickenburg, Tucson, and the Chiricahua Mountains. Oh, and the Carefree Highway. Soon.
