An interesting post at American meteorologist Anthony Watts’ climate change and global warming blog, Watt’s Up With That, points to a devastating example of not just media bias but actual false reporting and quote fabrication in an effort to turn a press release on the discovery of a hybrid shark by some marine biology researchers in Australia into a testament on climate change and global warming. Watts appropriately and cleverly headlines his story as “Media 101- How To Jump a Shark.” Here’s the gist of it:
A group of scientists I presume to be marine biologists conducting research in waters off of Australia issued a press release that contained the following headline:
World’s first discovery of hybrid sharks off Australia’s east coast
The press release discussed how it is thought the hybrid sharks might have come about, and buried in the statement were these two sentences by Dr Jennifer Ovenden:
“Hybridisation could enable the sharks to adapt to environmental change as the smaller Australian black tip currently favours tropical waters in the north.
“While the larger common black tip is more abundant in sub-tropical and temperate waters along the south-eastern Australian coastline.”
The Christian Science Monitor promptly printed a story under this headline:
New Hybrid Sharks Discovered: Signs of Global Warming?
The story then characterized Dr. Ovenden’s statement from the press release this way:
Ovenden speculated that the two species began mating in response to environmental change, as the hybrid blacktips are able to travel further south to cooler waters than the Australian blacktips. The team is looking into climate change and human fishing, among other potential triggers.
Nowhere in Dr. Ovenden’s statement or in the remainder of the press release do the words “global warming” or “climate change” appear. Dr. Ovenden’s statement that hybridization could enable sharks to adapt to environmental change was morphed into a claim that she had speculated inter-species mating began in response to environmental change, that it was a sign of global warming, and an affirmative statement that the researchers are looking into climate change as a potential trigger for it. The press release itself clearly shows that Dr. Ovenden said none of those things.
The Business Insider then tried to mischaracterize the substance of the press release that says nothing about climate change or global warming with this headline:
The World’s First Hybrid Shark is Another Scary Sign That Global Warming is Real
In the body of the story Reporter Dina Spector engages in quote fabrication and “jumps the shark” with these sentences purporting to be actual quotes by researcher Jess Morgan:
According to lead researcher Jess Morgan, the hybridization might be a sign that the animals are adapting to rising temperature levels as a result of climate change.
A reader who may have read the press release itself sent an email to Dr. Jessica Morgan asking her if the quote in the Business Insider story by Dina Spector was accurate and got this reply:
Quote not correct – I have now stated numerous times that it is extremely unlikely that climate change caused the hybridization event – however, the hybrid-Australian blacktips are now being seen further south of their known range (Australain blacktips have a tropical distribution) in cooler waters suggesting that the hybrids may have a wider temperature tolerance than their parents (ie the hybrids may be better adapted to handle changing water temperatures). That long statement is being condensed and printed as your quote below.
Headlines that exaggerate and distort, quote fabrication by journalists, it all leaves no doubt that much of what is passed off as journalism today is political propaganda, especially all the hooey on “global warming” and “climate change.” Everything that happens anywhere is attributed to global warming or, because there may not be any actual warming going on, to “climate change.” Distortions by headline writers have long been a way to slant, contort and twist the news. They know it works because many people will never read beyond the headline. It used to be if you read the story you’d find something in the story, probably at the very end, to reveal the headline as misleading. Nowadays maybe not. They just lie all the way through in case you read it all. You have to go to the source itself now, in essence you have to do your own reporting, to see how the “journalists” are brainwashing you.
Anthony Watts blog is heralded to be the world’s most viewed site on global warming and climate change. I’ve found it to be informative and helpful, and I trust it.
The Bolt Report is an Australian Sunday morning show in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The video below is a segment with an interview of Steve McIntyre who exposed the phony “hockey stick” devised by Michael Mann of Penn State University to “hide the decline” and perpetuate the global warming hoax. This video discusses the latest round of leaked emails from East Anglia University, dubbed Climategate II.
If the Bolt Report is representative, the Aussie Sunday morning shows look to be a whole lot more informative and objective than the U.S. kind, which only a masochist or a research psychologist studying deception in the media could watch.
There are several well known reasons to be wary of Newt Gingrich. His support for health care mandates and his chummy relationship with health care radical Dr. Donald Berwick, for example. No one, absolutely no one with any knowledge of Newt Gingrich, should expect a repeal of Obamacare should Newt Gingrich be the next president.
Then there is Gingrich’s support for the ethanol boondoggle, his support for cap and trade with Nancy Pelosi, and his foolish and uninformed embrace of the hoax of man-made global warming.
But the scariest thing about a Gingrich presidency is contained in the book “Breach of Trust,” by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. Coburn recounts how Gingrich as Speaker of the House became overly fond of the trappings of power, such that he began to undermine the momentum for fundamental change promised in the Contract With America. Coburn describes how the fervor of the freshmen lawmakers of 1994 quickly put them at odds with Gingrich: “[He] would receive our input, but he rarely took it seriously … We were from the outside and wet behind the ears in terms of politics and we obviously didn’t know as much about history as he did. It would not take long for us to become ‘the conservatives’ to him.” And it did not take long for the Contract with America to fall into the dustbin of history.
Gingrich has become the ultimate Washington insider. The $1.6 million he made consulting for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is irrefutable evidence, if any were needed.
We have a narcissist extraordinaire in the White House now. Gingrich is every bit as narcissistic as Obama. Conservatives will rue the day they throw their support to Newt Gingrich. He sells them out every time.
What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening, as heavyweight US solar physicists announce that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth – far from facing a global warming problem – is actually headed into a mini Ice Age.
Back to the future.
I wonder how thick the ice will have to get across North American before global warming alarmists will give it up. They’ll never give it up because it isn’t global warming or the environment they care about. They want to tell us what kind of light bulbs we can use, what shower heads we can buy, what cars we can drive, and every other sort of authoritarian rules they can impose on us.
In 1974 they were predicting Another Ice Age.
In 2005 The UN Environment Program (UNEP) warned there would be 50 million “climate refugees” by 2010,
UNEP said that sea-level rises, increased hurricanes, and desertification caused by man-made climate change would lead to massive population disruptions. In a map, the organization highlighted areas that were supposed to be particularly vulnerable, such as the Caribbean. The purple areas in the map show areas that would supposedly be full of 50 million refugees by 2010:
But it turns out that, not only did those areas fail to produce any “climate refugees,” their populations are actually booming.
Is there anyone who still believes in the man-made global warming hoax?
Sure there is. That’s because man-made global warming is a religion and it’s about faith not facts.
It is human nature to crave power, wealth, influence, status, prestige, control, authority, respect, admiration, and for certain individuals, dominance. Having these achievements is neither a vice nor evidence of vicious behavior, but the methods of getting them can be viciously wicked. The honorable way is ambition, hard work, intelligence, and luck.
Fraud, trickery and chicanery sometimes works, or entices with the allure of an easier path to the good life. That way is usually a false promise. The work is no less hard at times, and there is always the danger of detection and ruin before the goal is reached. Or losing the fruits of the crime later, as Bernie Madoff now knows.
The claims of scientists that the earth had warmed considerably as a result of human activities, along with predictions of future doom unless those activities were drastically altered, would have been immediately greeted with skepticism if more of us understood the phenomenon of social manipulation that Eric Hoffer described in his book The True Believer—Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, a book first published in 1951 and continuously in print since.
On mass movements Hoffer does not claim they are all identical but that they share certain essential characteristics:
All mass movements generate in their adherents a readiness to die and a proclivity for united action; all of them, irrespective of the doctrine they preach and the program they project, breed fanaticism, enthusiasm, fervent hope, hatred and intolerance; all of them are capable of releasing a powerful flow of activity in certain departments of life; all of them demand blind faith and singlehearted allegiance.
All movements, however different in doctrine and aspiration, draw their early adherents from the same types of humanity; they all appeal to the same types of mind.
The man-made global warming hysteria that has swept around the world for the last twenty some years has surely been a mass movement exceeded in size only by communism and facism. That it shares similar characteristics of these mass movements and attracts people of a similar mind is evident. Hoffer said, “The technique of a mass movement aims to infect people with a malady and then offer the movement as a cure.” The anthropegenic global warming (AGW) mass movement sought to infect the world society with the belief that humans were causing the earth to warm to levels dangerous to life as we know it, and offered the Kyoto treaty, the Copenhagen accord, and countless prescriptions for a return to the middle ages as necessary sacrifices for “saving the planet.”
All active mass movements strive, therefore, to interpose a fact-proof screen between the faithful and the realities of the world.
When some scientists and large numbers of ordinary people became skeptical of the AGW dogma, and after it became obvious that the earth was not even warming anymore, the AGW faithful quickly changed their rhetoric from “global warming” to “climate change” and argued that even severe cold in some parts of the earth as well as cooling overall were just an aspect of AGW, a very complicated process they said, which might involve some cooling as well as warming. In fact, just about everything from tornadoes, hurricanes to earthquakes were said to be caused by AGW.
Are the frustrated more easily indoctrinated that the non-frustrated? Are they more credulous? Pascal was of the opinion that “one was well-minded to understand holy writ when one hated oneself.” There is apparently some connection between dissatisfaction with oneself and a proneness to credulity. The urge to escape our real self is also an urge to escape the rational and the obvious. The refusal to see ourselves as we are develops a distaste for facts and cold logic. There is no hope for the frustrated in the actual and the possible. Salvation can come to them only from the miraculous, which seeps trough a crack in the iron wall of inexorable reality. They ask to be deceived. What Stresemann said of the Germans is true of the frustrated in general: “[They] pray not only for [their] daily bread, but also for [their] daily illusion.” The rule seems to be that those who find no difficulty in deceiving themselves are easily deceived by others. They are easily persuaded and led.
After the leaked or hacked emails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, England, the reaction of the AGW proponents across England, Europe and America was to downplay or deny outright the facts which were apparent to anyone who was not among the faithful. The British media, especially the London Times and the Telegraph, were quick to get on the story and report the facts as they appeared to be, but the entire old media in the United States did its best to first ignore the story completely or, in those few instances where it could not, to focus more on how the emails came to be made public rather that what was contained in them.
Senator Barbara Boxer of California stated that she would not read emails that had been “illegally obtained,” although I’m sure she had no trouble with the Pentagon Papers after they were purloined in a burglary by the Berrigan brothers.
More recently Barack Obama joined other national heads of state at Copenhagen to give speeches and make declarations as if nothing had happened. The CRU emails which had been made public all over the world showed AGW scientists admitting that the data needed to be manipulated because it wasn’t coming out right, i.e., not supporting their theory. Did that make a difference at Copenhagen? No, no, those emails were ignored. Nothing to see there. Obama has made speeches since the CRU emails became public in which he has referenced AGW as if nothing has occurred to cast any doubt whatsoever upon it.
Unusually cold weather is now occurring across the globe, there is a Big Freeze in Britain, and the previous warming which had been occurring on its own appears to have ceased and been replaced by a global cooling trend in the last ten years. The AGW adherents have done their level best to pretend none of that has happened either.
Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in God, but never without belief in a devil. Usually the strength of a mass movement is proportionate to the vividness and tangibility of its devil. When Hitler was asked whether he thought the Jew must be destroyed, he answered: “No….We should have then to invent him. It is essential to have a tangible enemy, not merely an abstract one.” F.A. Voigt tells of a Japanese mission which arrived in Berlin in 1932 to study the National Socialist Movement. Voigt asked a member of the mission what he thought of the movement. He replied: “It is magnificent. I wish we could have something like it in Japan, only we can’t, because we haven’t any Jews.”
The AGW true believers enemies list is a long one. It includes the oil and gas industry, of course. The energy industry has served quite well as a devil for the believers, as it has for politicians, because everyone has to buy energy every day and everyone is sensitive to the price of it and eager to find someone to blame when they think it is too high.
The attempt to portray global warming skeptics as “deniers” on the scale of “holocaust deniers” is a quintessential attempt, albeit a failed one, to create vivid and tangible devils to bolster and strengthen the AGW movement. It is also typical of the acute emotional reaction to facts and logic that True Believers display when their pet doctrines are challenged.
The chief enemy of the AGW true believers at the moment is Steve McIntyre, a Canadian mining consultant whose analysis debunked Michael Mann’s Hockey Stick chart of 1998, and who has analysed every paper the CRU scientists have published since. Mr. McIntyre and his website, Climate Audit, seem to be driving the believers quite nuts. He is not well enough known to the public to really serve the purpose as a devil as yet but attempts will be made to change that if he continues to expose the truth about their claims.
The believers have attempted to make suitable devils out of anyone and everyone who stands to offer any evidence, facts or logic against AGW. They have done this by trying to exclude non-believing scientists from getting their articles published, and by refusing to submit their own articles for peer review.
Next: How the fraud out of the UEA is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s here in the United States as well.
Advocates of man-made global warming are having a bad year. The cold weather in the South is, as Barack Obama would say, “unprecedented,” as this video clip from The Today Show reports:
Vodpod videos no longer available. See also the London Daily Mail article I discussed at Mini Ice Age?
The London Daily Mail says the Northern hemisphere could be heading into a mini ice age that will last 20-30 years. The article cites some impressive evidence.
The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.
Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy’s most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in
summer by 2013.
According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this.
No matter that there has been no warming since 1999 and all indications are that we are now entering a cooling period, global warming proponents aren’t about to let go of their massive fraud that once promised fame and fortune:
Last week, as Britain froze, Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband maintained in a parliamentary answer that the science of global warming was ‘settled’.

This NASA photo taken at 11:15 AM (GMT) on Thursday shows Britain completely covered in snow. Looks like Greenland. Story in the U.K. Telegraph.
Record cold weather across the U.S. and in Britain continues to plague the theory of anthropegenic global warming. As if doctored data, leaked emails, destruction of documents requested under freedom of information laws, and blocking peer review of scientific articles were not enough.
Check the following headlines for today:
And if the constant hammering of more cold weather from mother nature weren’t enough, there is this from the UKIP (UK Independence Party) which advocates withdrawal of Britain from the EU, and speaks out against the sham of man-made global warming, carbon taxes, and the global pillage and impoverishment sought by global warming proponents under the guise of “saving the planet.” This video shows snippets from the EU Parliament. It’s the sort of thing you will only see on the internet because the state-run media is not interested in it.
This is from Climategate: Michael Mann’s Very Unhappy New Year by James Delingpole writing the U.K. Telegraph:
As I said yesterday, one of our jobs this year is to wipe the complacent smiles off the smug faces of the lobbyists, “experts”, “scientists”, politicians and activists pushing AGW.
This is why I am so glad to report that Michael Mann – creator of the incredible Hockey Stick curve and one of the scientists most heavily implicated in the Climategate scandal – is about to get a very nasty shock. When he turns up to work on Monday, he’ll find that all 27 of his colleagues at the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University have received a rather tempting email inviting them to blow the whistle on anyone they know who may have been fraudulently misusing federal grant funds for climate research.
Under US law, regardless of whether or not a prosecution results, the whistleblower stands to make very large sums of money: it is based on a percentage of the total government funds which have been misused, in this case perhaps as much as $50 million. (Hat tip: John O’Sullivan of the wonderful new campaigning site http://www.climategate.com)
See my previous post: The Amazing Hockey Stick Trick
It’s cold in Britain. In fact, according to this story in the Telegraph, Britain is facing its coldest winter in 100 years. Expert predictions of a “barbecue summer” were proved wrong by record rain and cool weather in July, and now it seems official predictions of a mild winter were wildly inaccurate as well.
The global warming fraud is being so often exposed by mother nature as well as the East Anglia emails, it may reach a point where we’ll have to start feeling sorry for the hoaxers.
I wonder if Global warming true believers who insist that human activity is warming the planet ask themselves if the current warming period (which seems to have ended around 1999) is part of a historical pattern or if it is something entirely new.
Of all the silly and ridiculous global warming hype the claim that methane from cow flatulence was threatening to raise global temperatures and destroy the planet had to be about the weirdest. The IPCC published a 400 page report in 2006 claiming that herds of cattle were one of the biggest threats to the preservation of life on earth due to methane gas heating up the earth’s average temperature. We were told it was either give up eating beef or drown from rising sea levels. It was going to be a choice between cows or waterworld.
You’d think that with the exposure that the global warming alarmists have been cooking the books and making up data the cow flatulence theories would be all but forgotten. Not so, apparently. At least not in Great Britain.
Charles Crowley reports of high level conversations and warnings coming out of lofty regions of the mother country. He states,
First, climate chief, Lord Stern of Brentford has urged the world’s population to turn completely vegetarian in order to reduce its carbon footprint on the planet: ”Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources” he claims. “Direct methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.”
The rest of Crowley’s report is hilarious and it’s available here for your amusement and edification.
You can see the hockey stick in the above graph. “Mike’s Nature Trick”, as his colleague, the now furloughed Phil Jones referred to Penn State “scientist’ Michael Mann’s creative reconstruction of historical temperature data, was to “hide the decline” in temperature data for the late 20th Century which would have obliterated the blade of the hockey stick.
The handle of the hockey stick was made straight by hiding the upward bulge of temperatures during the Medieval Warming period from 900-1300 A.D. The Little Ice Age which lasted from the 1500’s to the mid-19th Century was also manipulated to help straighten the handle of the hockey stick so that a consistent slightly downward trend of historical temperatures for 1,000 years followed by a sudden and marked upward trend in the last half of the 20th Century would result, lending credence to the theory that unprecedented global warming is occurring and human activity must be causing it.
It’s all a massive fraud on the order of Piltdown man.
But before you head over there, take a look as this amusing “Hide the Decline” short music video.
